In line with the Year of Sustainability, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and du, a subsidiary of Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC), have signed an agreement to harness the latest technologies to enhance more than 20 sustainability initiatives. This agreement provides comprehensive support for the implementation of the initiatives aimed at raising environmental awareness and supporting individuals to adopt sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation between the two parties to help them achieve combined goals of enhancing environmental communication and awareness efforts that will reach millions of people especially regarding the issue of climate change.

Her Excellency Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General at EAD, said: “We are pleased to enhance cooperation in the field of technology between EAD and du, as part of the UAE’s ambitious vision to achieve sustainable development. This became evident with the declaration by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, that 2023 is the Year of Sustainability. Similarly, the UAE’s hosting of COP 28 this year coincides with our continuous endeavours to raise awareness and disseminate information related to environmental issues, climate change and sustainability.

“This MoU sets the framework for cooperation to achieve these sustainability goals by establishing a collaborative partnership to promote initiatives and existing content within one digital platform. This helps to facilitate content publication, while increasing participation and raising environmental awareness by harnessing advanced technology to promote and develop existing community initiatives. It will also encourage the migration of new and innovative ideas on to high-impact platforms.

“This partnership will also allow us to intensify our efforts in raising public awareness and participation by using innovative communication tools. We will pave the way for a sustainable and prosperous future that facilitates economic growth, technological innovation and environmental preservation together.

“EAD is the main authority concerned with protecting the environment in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and shares the responsibility with the larger community. Signing this MoU with du will open new horizons for joint work by strategic institutions that will enable us to enhance joint capabilities in the field of increasing environmental awareness by taking advantage of the latest progressive innovation in the digital space.”

Fahad Al Hassawi, CEO at du, said: “At du, sustainability is at the heart of our business, and the partnership with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi is perfectly aligned with our commitment to contributing to a sustainable future, and we are excited to benefit from our expertise in technological development and communications to contribute to making the UAE more sustainable.”

Al Hassawi said that in addition to focusing on digital transformation activities, du is also committed to achieving sustainability. The telecommunications company has implemented many sustainability initiatives to reduce its environmental impact including the use of renewable energy sources, the reduction of carbon emissions and the provision of technical solutions to the UAE market to reduce carbon emissions resulting from business operations.

Through this partnership, EAD and du envision a future in which technology plays a pivotal role in mitigating environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development by combining their strengths and expertise, with the cooperation helping to make a lasting impact on the environmental landscape in Abu Dhabi.
