His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Court, has launched the teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi project – an immersive, multi-sensory experience at the intersection of art and technology that will be the latest offering to become part of Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District.

The 17,000 sqm ‘home of infinite curiosity’ will feature original and constantly changing art and technology that is unique to Abu Dhabi and will inspire the next generation of creators and innovators. The installations will be housed within an architectural masterpiece that is designed to flow around the artworks.

His Highness launched the project at Mamsha Al Saadiyat, where a preview activation is offering a ‘taster’ of what the new destination will feature. His Highness was accompanied by His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, His Excellency Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary, Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, His Excellency Saleh Mohamed Saleh Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism, Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Toshiyuki Inoko, Founder, teamLab, and Takashi Kudo, Communications Director, teamLab.

For the teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi concept, DCT Abu Dhabi has partnered with Miral to develop the architecture and facilities, alongside teamLab, the globally acclaimed, interdisciplinary Tokyo-based art collective, known for their unique artistic vision. Construction on the project is due to complete in 2024.

Strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading cultural centre, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will be strategically located between Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, bridging the gap between history, culture and creativity, and immersing visitors deep inside the creative experience.

Visitors to teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will be invited to open their minds and embark on a journey through teamLab’s new concept of environmental phenomena, which offers new perspectives on the world. The featured artworks, which will be created through an extensive experimentation process, will be shaped by the changing environment.

The adapted and unique architecture, designed exclusively for teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, plays an important role in providing the artworks with an environment in which to evolve freely and organically. Each experience will be unique to each visitor, changing with every visit, as they discover a place in which to explore and transcend the limits of their imagination.

Building on the experiences offered by its neighbouring Saadiyat Cultural District institutions, which will include the Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, as well as the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will further enrich visitors’ wide-ranging experience of human creativity, culture, and history.

Having created art that is part of the collection of global institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, among many others, teamLab’s artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians and architects are creating an original offering in Abu Dhabi that will define teamlab Phenomena Abu Dhabi as a unique experience.

HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “Curiosity and imagination are at the core of who we are as human beings, sparking all our discoveries, inventions and innovations through the millennia. Sitting at the intersection of art, technology, nature and high-tech fantasy, the Saadiyat Cultural District’s teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will offer a world of boundless wonder and creativity to all who visit, encouraging the new perspectives that are so essential to a thriving future. Adding yet another outstanding attraction to our already world-leading cultural destination, the teamLab Phenomena experience will be unique to Abu Dhabi, reinforcing the emirate’s position as a global destination of distinction. Providing a journey which will trigger the senses, nurture curiosity, spark imagination, and awaken a thirst for knowledge, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi fully supports our commitment to inspire a new generation of innovators and creators in the emirate and beyond.”

The teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi project reaffirms the emirate’s vision to foster its Culture and Creative Industries (CCI) and position Abu Dhabi as a global centre for creativity and innovation.

The preview activation event is open to the public at Mamsha Al Saadiyat from 24 June to 17 July.
