The Family Development Foundation (FDF) and the Abu Dhabi Housing Authority (ADHA), in collaboration with the Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi (DCD), have offered the Obtaining Approval to Extend the Repayment Period of Housing Loans service for primary caregivers of senior citizens. The service forms part of the Barakatna initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.
The service aims to empower children to support their parents’ daily needs while maintaining financial stability by allowing an extension of their housing loan repayment period by up to five years. This reduces monthly instalments, easing financial pressure while ensuring continued care for senior family members.
His Excellency Abdulrahman Al Baloushi, Director of the Department of Strategic Planning and Institutional Development at the FDF, said: "This initiative reflects a collaborative approach among key strategic partners to improve the quality of life for senior citizens and enhance family cohesion. By easing the daily burdens on primary caregivers, the service supports them in delivering comprehensive and effective care that reflects the deeply rooted Emirati values of filial piety and family care."
His Excellency further highlighted that the initiative activates the family’s role within the broader social care system and promotes a culture of intergenerational solidarity. By providing caregivers with necessary support and guidance, the aim is to reinforce the dignity and value of senior citizens within families and society at large, and the importance of shared responsibility in their care and wellbeing.
Mohammed Abdulrahman Al Marzouqi, Acting Executive Director of Policy Development and Strategic Sector at ADHA, stated that one of the key eligibility conditions is that the applicant must be the primary caregiver of a parent aged 60 or above, and must have an active, fully repayable individual basic loan from ADHA, such as those granted for building, purchasing or rebuilding a home.
Al Marzouqi added that applications must be submitted through the TAMM platform, along with all required documentation. The FDF will verify eligibility, after which ADHA will extend the repayment period within one week.
This step forms part of the Abu Dhabi Government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the wellbeing of senior citizens, ensure housing stability, and deliver high-quality services that meet their needs, while empowering caregivers in fulfilling their social and family responsibilities toward their elderly parents.
